We just got back from Dragon*Con 2015, and it was as fantastic as usual this year. I got to see some good friends, some good panels, and some really cool people. Although I did spend most of my time in the Space Track and Writer’s Track, I did get out enough to check out more than a few extraordinary costumes. You can see a few of the pictures at my other site.
Fantasy
Avengers of Oz: Age of Tin Man
What happens when you mix the Wizard of Oz and Avengers? Maybe something like this…
Steampunk Superheroes!
There are heroes, there are superheroes, and then there are steampunk superheroes! Hop on over to the article on MoviePilot.com to see more of these fantastic heroes of brass, gears, and steam.
Surreal Airships of Jaroslaw Jasnikowski
Jaroslaw Jasnikowski is a surrealist famed for his amazing depictions of machines and airships. Here are just a few of his extraordinary fantasy airships! You can find more of his artwork online.
The Door at Alley’s End
My dark science fantasy short story, The Door at Alley’s End, has now been published in the February 2015 issue of Beyond Science Fiction. If you want to check it out, and read some other good stories from a few lesser known writers, then go get yourself a copy at Amazon today!
Amazing Airship Model
Take a look at this amazing, custom-made airship model by Rich Plotczik. The airship is built entirely from spare parts and whatnot (as all steampunk artifacts should), and follows a whimsical, catamaran type design. I would personally be afraid to fly in it, but it is certainly very cool.
Space Pirate Captain Harlock
In a nostalgic flashback to Japanese anime of the 1980s, Space Pirate Captain Harlock is returning in a new 3D animated movie. James Cameron says of the film “This movie is already legendary.” Judging from this trailer, it does look to be pretty awesome. It’s been a long time since the old days of the Captain Harlock, Queen Emeraldas, and Galaxy Express 999, so we’ll just have to see how this film plays out.
Airship of Doom
Take a look at this awesome airship battle illustration by Alex Koshelkov.
And now for the really cool part: he also posted a video of how he made it! Very impressive stuff.
Steampunk at Dragon*Con 2012
There was a pretty big turn out for the steampunk scene at Dragon*Con 2012. Most of the pictures I got (which turned out, anyway) were from the Dragon*Con parade, and it look like there were some really talented makers and builders of all kinds of steampunk costumes, devices, and even vehicles!
Capitalization of Fantasy Race Names, Redux
I have revised my essay on the Capitalization of Fantasy Race Names. With further consideration and additional research, I have determined that my original conclusion — that the race name should be treated as a proper noun — was wrong. Instead, fantasy race names are really common nouns, and in most situations should be lower cased (in other words, Tolkien was wrong — so there).
Rather than posting a revised essay, I have updated the old one, primarily due to the number of link backs from other sites and forums which are referencing that essay. Anyway, go ahead and check it out.
